Tailor detained in Assam's Morigaon over alleged death threat to Himanta during Facebook Live

A tailor was detained in Assam's Morigaon district after a Facebook account bearing his name allegedly issued a death threat to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the latter's Facebook Live session, police said.

The man, identified as Abdul Mutaleb, was detained by Bhuragaon Police after the alleged threat was posted while the Chief Minister's Facebook Live was underway.

However, Mutaleb has denied making the threat and claimed that a fake Facebook account had been created using his photograph to implicate him.

"This is completely fake. I request the police to probe the matter. I am now heading to the police station. Someone has used my photo and created a fake Facebook account to make me the accused. I am just a tailor," Mutaleb said.

Police are questioning Mutaleb to ascertain whether he operated the account from which the alleged threat was issued and to establish the circumstances surrounding the post.

Investigators are also expected to examine the digital trail associated with the account, including its authenticity and activity, to determine whether Mutaleb was behind the post or whether someone else used his identity.

The incident occurred while the Chief Minister was interacting with people through Facebook Live. The alleged threat prompted police action and the detention of the suspected account holder.

The case has also highlighted concerns over the misuse of social media and the creation of fake accounts to issue threats or implicate individuals.
