Tension erupts at rehab centre in Assam's Nagaon over alleged abuse of inmates

Tension prevailed at a rehabilitation centre in Assam's Nagaon district after serious allegations of physical abuse and negligence were levelled against its management.

According to local residents, the incident occurred at the Wish Welfare Foundation rehabilitation centre in Juria. The management has been accused of routinely assaulting young inmates undergoing treatment for drug addiction.

The allegations surfaced after a youth allegedly sustained a fractured leg following a severe beating by staff members on Saturday night. Family members and locals claimed that despite charging substantial fees from guardians, the centre failed to provide proper medical care and adequate food to the inmates.

Residents further alleged that inmates were subjected to regular physical assault during the night instead of receiving professional treatment and counselling.

The situation turned tense after news of the alleged assault and injury spread, prompting protests and demands for action against the rehabilitation centre.

Local people have urged the police and district administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and shut down the facility if the claims are found to be true.

Police are reportedly looking into the matter, while authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations.
