Tension in Assam’s Kokrajhar after suspected cow meat found in Hindu household, 7 detained

A tense situation unfolded in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Wednesday, March 25 morning after suspected cow meat was discovered in the courtyard of a Hindu household, triggering unrest and sparking communal tensions in the area.

The incident occurred at No. 3 Nayasara village under the Salakati Police Outpost, where the residence of one Khitish Barman became the focal point of the controversy. According to reports, locals alleged that suspected cow meat had been deliberately thrown into the courtyard, leading to widespread anger among residents.

The situation escalated rapidly as an agitated mob reportedly attacked houses belonging to members of a particular community, causing significant damage to property. Protesters also raised slogans demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible, further intensifying the already charged atmosphere.

Acting swiftly, senior officials of Kokrajhar Police, accompanied by a large contingent of security personnel, rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control. Authorities pacified the crowd and took preventive measures to avoid further escalation.

In connection with the incident, police have detained seven individuals, four men and three women, for questioning. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events and identify those responsible.

Preliminary information suggests that a wedding feast was being organised at the residence of Mafiz Mondal’s nephew in the same village, where beef was allegedly served. It is suspected that some of the meat may have been carried away by a stray dog and inadvertently dropped into the courtyard of Khitish Barman’s house, possibly triggering the unrest.

Meanwhile, local councilor and BTC Executive Member Derhasat Basumatary visited the village shortly after the incident, assessed the ground situation, and appealed to residents to maintain peace and communal harmony. He assured that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found responsible for instigating violence or disturbing public order.
