Three houses gutted in Assam's Margherita blaze, families left homeless

A devastating fire broke out in Maichangpani village under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district on February 20 afternoon, reducing three residential houses to ashes and leaving the affected families homeless.

The blaze erupted suddenly in broad daylight and spread rapidly, creating panic in the area. Within moments, the fire engulfed the houses, destroying all household belongings and several bighas of areca nut saplings.

According to reports, the houses belonged to Duleswar Gogoi, Sharat Boro and Durlabh Sonowal. The intensity of the flames was such that the families were unable to salvage any of their possessions.

Duleswar Gogoi’s residence was completely gutted, along with nearly three and a half bighas of areca nut saplings. The homes of Sharat Boro and Durlabh Sonowal were also destroyed, including stored agricultural produce such as potatoes, mustard and turmeric, as well as household furniture.

The three families have been left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing at the time of the incident and are currently taking shelter in the open.

Preliminary information suggests that the fire may have spread while a woman was burning garbage nearby.

Local residents and the affected families have appealed to the Assam government and the Margherita co-district administration for immediate relief and adequate compensation.
