Three killed, one injured in high-voltage electrocution incident in Assam’s Chirang district

Three people were electrocuted to death and another sustained injuries after a sudden high-voltage electric surge swept through Amteka No. 1 Elengmari village in Assam’s Chirang district on Saturday, January 24 night.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at around 10:30 pm when an unexpected flow of high-voltage electricity passed through the village, turning household electrical lines deadly. The surge proved fatal for three residents, while one person was injured and rushed for medical treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Daimalu Narzary, Bijoy Mushahary, and Michael Basumatary.

In a particularly heart-rending turn of events, Michael Basumatary had solemnised his marriage earlier in the day, only to lose his life just hours later, casting a shadow of mourning over what was meant to be a celebration.

Sources said the incident was triggered after a high-voltage line reportedly came into contact with a single-phase low-tension (LT) wire mounted on an ST pole, resulting in the dangerous transmission of power into residential areas. Reports suggest that the high-voltage current affected not only the wedding house but also several other locations in the village.

Residents described scenes of chaos as people scrambled to disconnect power supplies amid fears of further electrocution. Power authorities were alerted soon after the incident, and electricity supply to the affected area was reportedly cut to prevent further casualties.
