Tiger strays into Assam's Margherita town, kills goat before disappearing into nearby jungle

Panic gripped Margherita town in Assam's Tinsukia district on June 20 after a tiger was reportedly spotted roaming within the premises of the old A'R & T Company Limited Veneer Mill during broad daylight.

According to local residents, the big cat entered the abandoned mill compound and killed a goat, triggering fear and commotion in the area. Several residents claimed to have witnessed the animal moving through the premises.

As locals gathered and raised an alarm, the tiger reportedly retreated into the nearby forested area.

The century-old veneer mill, which has remained closed for years, has gradually turned into a densely vegetated tract with thick undergrowth, creating a suitable habitat for wildlife.

The sighting of a tiger in a populated urban area has come as a surprise to residents, raising concerns over human-wildlife conflict and public safety.

Following reports of the incident, officials from the Margherita East Range Forest Office under the Digboi Forest Division, along with personnel from Margherita Police, rushed to the spot and began monitoring the situation.

Forest authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into dense vegetation or isolated areas until the movement of the animal is properly assessed.

The incident has sparked widespread concern across Margherita, with locals closely watching developments and awaiting further action from the forest department.
