Tihu gears up for grand 73rd Raas Mahotsav: Cultural splendour to honour Zubeen Garg

With festive fervour building across Assam, preparations are in full swing for the 73rd edition of the Tihu Barowari Raas Mahotsav in Nalbari district, set to be celebrated from November 5 to November 15 with an elaborate 11-day programme.

This year’s celebration promises to be one of the most vibrant editions yet, blending spiritual devotion with cultural grandeur. Among the prime attractions will be a spectacular illuminated bridge over the Tihu River, crafted entirely with decorative lighting, along with a thematic pavilion titled “Operation Sindoor.”

In a heartfelt gesture, the organizing committee has dedicated a special stall and cultural segment in memory of Assam’s iconic artist, late Zubeen Garg. The tribute, titled “Shorgat Aji Kom Sabha Hoisene” (Have There Been Fewer Gatherings in Heaven Today), will feature musical performances and heartfelt tributes to the beloved singer, celebrating his timeless contribution to Assamese art and culture.

Meanwhile, traditional artisans are busy sculpting clay idols of Lord Sri Krishna, giving shape to mythological scenes inspired by the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vedas, and Upanishads. The organisers have allocated an estimated Rs 60 lakh for the event, which will showcase Krishna’s various divine incarnations through intricate clay artistry. Around a dozen artisans are working tirelessly each day to bring these scenes to life.

Final touches are being applied to cultural stages such as the 'Robha' (pendal) and main performance arenas, ensuring all arrangements are completed ahead of schedule.

The Mahotsav grounds are expected to draw thousands of devotees and visitors daily, turning Tihu into a vibrant confluence of faith, art, and community spirit. The event will also serve as a platform of cultural unity, welcoming people from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds.

Adding to the grandeur, a cabinet minister will attend as chief guest on each day of the festival, while a series of cultural programmes, devotional performances, and art exhibitions will complement the main Ras Mahotsav rituals.

Organisers expressed optimism that this year’s celebration will not only revive traditional devotion but also reaffirm Tihu’s reputation as one of Assam’s leading spiritual and cultural destinations.
