TMC targets Assam government and Congress, announces mass defection ahead of polls

A meeting of the Dulu Ahmed-led Trinamool Congress unit was held at the local Natya Mandir premises in Pathsala, where party leaders launched a sharp attack on the state government and the Congress ahead of the upcoming elections.

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of the meeting, Dulu Ahmed expressed regret that the killer of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has still not been identified. He alleged that there was little point in appealing to the Chief Minister, claiming that the latter does not listen to the people of Assam and therefore would not heed his concerns either.

Ahmed also announced that more than 15 Congress leaders who were denied tickets have quit the party and will join the Trinamool Congress to contest the elections. The meeting was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, who outlined the party’s strategy and role in the forthcoming polls and oversaw a joining programme.

Sushmita Dev indicated that the Trinamool Congress will field a candidate in Bajali this time, hinting that Kalyani Kalita could be a probable nominee.

Continuing his attack on the Congress, Dulu Ahmed called on Congress workers to confront Rakibul Hussain, stating that he would praise the Congress only after such action is taken. He also sharply criticised Rekibuddin Ahmed and declared that he would join the fray from the Chamaria constituency.

Meanwhile, Sushmita Dev expressed disappointment that despite appealing to the government to hand over Zubeen Garg’s ashes for immersion in the Barak river, the ashes have not yet been received.
