Traffic cop accused of assaulting women, men and toddler with iron rod in Assam's Mariani
A traffic police constable in Assam's Mariani has been accused of assaulting several people, including women and a two-year-old child, with an iron rod following a dispute between two tenant families over a water pump switch. A video purportedly showing the assault has triggered widespread outrage and raised concerns over police accountability.
The incident reportedly took place on Monday evening at a rented accommodation belonging to Imtiaz Hussain in Gandhinagar locality of Mariani, where two families were residing as tenants.
According to reports, the dispute began over the operation of a water pump switch between the family of Husnara Khatun and another tenant family. The daughter of Anil Tai, a traffic police constable posted at Mariani Police Station, was also residing in the same house.
Following the altercation, Tai allegedly entered Husnara Khatun's residence along with his wife and daughter. The family is accused of attacking the occupants with an iron rod, allegedly assaulting men, women and a two-year-old child.
Later that night, the injured family members, including women and the child, approached Mariani Police Station and lodged a complaint against the constable. They also reportedly submitted video footage purportedly documenting the assault.
However, the victims have alleged that the police failed to initiate appropriate action despite receiving the complaint and the video evidence.
According to the allegations, the injured women, who were carrying the child, were made to wait on the police station premises for several hours. The emergency duty officer allegedly did not come out of his room to receive the complaint properly or facilitate medical examinations of the injured persons.
The victims further alleged that no medical examination was arranged before they were asked to leave the police station late at night.
