Trucks stranded on Silchar-Manipur highway as violence disrupts movement, drivers seek govt intervention

The continuing unrest in Manipur has left a large number of trucks stranded along the Silchar-Manipur National Highway, with drivers complaining of worsening conditions, lack of food and water, and the risk of their cargo being damaged.

According to the stranded truckers, vehicles carrying goods from different parts of the country have been stuck on the route for several days. While some drivers said they have been stranded for around eight days, others have been waiting for 10 to 15 days.

The prolonged halt has also raised concerns over perishable goods. Truckers said cargo loaded on their vehicles is beginning to rot or deteriorate as they remain stuck on the highway.

The drivers also complained of inadequate access to basic facilities, including drinking water, bathing facilities and proper food. Many said they have been forced to spend days and nights by the roadside in the hilly terrain.

Frustrated by the situation, the truckers questioned why vehicles carrying goods are being allowed to travel towards Manipur when the security situation remains uncertain.

“If the government cannot resolve the situation in Manipur, why are we being sent there with our goods?” some of the drivers said, urging authorities to take a clear decision on the movement of commercial vehicles.

They said travelling through the affected areas poses a security risk, while prolonged delays are causing financial losses to both truck owners and drivers.

The stranded drivers have urged the government to intervene immediately, ensure their safety and, if necessary, temporarily restrict the movement of loaded trucks towards Manipur until the situation improves.

They also sought immediate arrangements for food, water and other basic necessities for those who remain stranded along the highway.
