Two temples vandalised in Assam's Kokrajhar on Republic Day, security tightened
Tension prevailed in parts of Assam’s Kokrajhar district after miscreants vandalised two temples in the Gossaigaon area during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, January 26, coinciding with Republic Day.
According to police sources, the incident took place at Ghonapara under the jurisdiction of the Bhaoraguri Police Outpost. Unidentified persons allegedly broke into two public Kali temples and desecrated the idols, causing damage to the religious structures.
The act of vandalism came to light on Monday morning, triggering resentment among local residents. Villagers strongly condemned the incident and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved, terming it an attempt to disturb communal harmony.
Police personnel rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and initiated an investigation. Security has been heightened in the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident.
Authorities said all possible angles are being examined to identify and apprehend the culprits, while efforts are underway to maintain peace and normalcy in the region.
