Upper Assam church conference draws 500, highlights youth and community prayer
A three-day annual conference and revival programme of the 62-U UASBCU opened on January 9 at Sumi Baptist Church, Paharpur, bringing together worshippers from across Upper Assam and neighbouring areas.
Held from January 9–11 in Paharpur under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency, the gathering has drawn more than 500 participants, including members of the Adivasi and Gorkha Christian communities from Margherita. Organisers said the strong turnout reflects renewed emphasis on youth engagement and collective prayer at a time of social uncertainty.
The opening day began with an invocation by Ino Pitoi Chophy, chairman of UACLF, followed by the inaugural service hosted by the local church. Community representatives led prayers and offerings, with hymns and special songs preceding the sermon delivered by Rev Kahoto Zhimo, pastor of the host church.
The second day will focus on encouragement and fellowship, featuring hymnal singing, special musical performances and a sermon, along with offerings led by affiliated church leaders.
The programme will conclude on Sunday with dedicated prayers for youth, Paharpur village and local residents.
Jogdang Jugli, pastor of Sumi Baptist Lalpahar under the 83rd Margherita LAC, said the annual conference-cum-revival is held every January across six Sema villages in Upper Assam, rotating venues each year. This year’s host, he noted, was chosen to broaden participation and strengthen ties among Christian communities in Tinsukia district and the wider Margherita area.
