UPPL eyeing for 20–25 seats in Assam assembly polls: Pramod Boro

The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) is gearing up for a wider electoral footprint in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, with plans to contest between 20 and 25 constituencies, party president and former Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Pramod Boro said on January 8.

Speaking to the media in Kokrajhar, Boro stated that the party would field candidates only in those constituencies where it has a strong organisational presence and a realistic chance of victory. He, however, clarified that the party has not yet taken a final call on electoral alliances.

Boro said discussions on alliance possibilities are still underway and that a clear decision will be taken after Magh Bihu, indicating that the party is keeping its options open ahead of the crucial polls.

Responding to remarks made by BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary, who recently stated that there would be no alliance with UPPL in the BTC-area Assembly constituencies, Boro said that Mohilary would naturally work to strengthen the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), while UPPL would focus on consolidating its own organisational base.

Emphasising the party’s independent political stance, Boro asserted that UPPL does not require permission from any other party to contest elections. “UPPL will fight the elections on its own strength and continue working independently for the party and the people,” he said.

The statement underscores UPPL’s intent to emerge as a decisive political force in Assam, particularly in Bodoland and adjoining regions, as preparations for the Assembly elections gather momentum.
