As the state eagerly gears up for the festive spirit of Bhogali Bihu, the historic Tamranga Beel in Bongaigaon district is buzzing with activity, especially at the Uruka fish market. With Uruka, the eve of Bhogali Bihu, just a day away, the market is flooded with a diverse array of fish, setting the stage for joyous celebrations.
Residents and visitors from across Assam, including Guwahati, Nagaon, Barpeta, Morigaon, are flocking to the banks of Tamranga's chital, row, bhokua, aari, and more to partake in the age-old tradition of purchasing fish for the Uruka night feast.
Despite the annual challenge of soaring fish prices, enthusiasts are undeterred. The Uruka night sees a surge in buyers who are keen on bringing home the well-flavored catches from the renowned beel. Families are thronging the fish market, carefully selecting their favorite fish varieties to enjoy a delightful meal together on the auspicious night of Uruka.
A local has expressed, "I came here to purchase fish, but the prices have skyrocketed, making it challenging for middle-class families. Given the significance of our local lakes like Tamranga and Doloni, we had planned to celebrate Uruka with a family feast, but every year, the increasing prices pose a difficulty. We've heard that the government has taken steps to address the issue this year, but unfortunately, we don't see any visible impact here."
As the state gets ready to celebrate the cultural richness of Bhogali Bihu, the bustling Tamaranga fish market exemplifies the significance of this tradition, where the love for delectable fish takes center stage in the festive preparations.
