Vegetable crop vandalised in Assam's Dhubri, farmer suffers significant loss

Two bighas of vegetable crops owned by Saddam Hossain in Gauripur's Lalkura village, in Assam's Dhubri were destroyed by vandals under the cover of night. The senseless act of sabotage has left Hossain, a dedicated farmer, devastated and prompted outrage among local residents.

Hossain had devoted significant effort to cultivating a variety of vegetables, including Luffa acutangula, Luffa aegyptiaca, wax gourd, and pumpkin, across his two-bigha plot. The destruction of these crops has not only shattered a season's labour but also impacted his means of livelihood.

The incident, which occurred late at night, resulted in approximately three quintals of mature vegetables being cut down and rendered unsalable. This malicious act eradicated months of hard work and financial investment.

Speaking to reporters, a visibly distraught Saddam Hossain expressed his anguish, stating, "I poured my heart and soul into this cultivation, hoping to provide for my family." He lamented further, "Now, everything is gone, destroyed by some evil circle." The attack has underscored vulnerabilities faced by small farmers in the region.

The motive behind this deliberate destruction remains unclear, adding to the community's distress. The brazen act has been widely condemned as a direct attack on the livelihood of a hardworking farmer and a disturbing example of rural delinquency.
