Violence erupts at Assam–Meghalaya border, one reported dead, after clash over paddy harvesting

Tensions escalated along the Assam–Meghalaya border following a violent clash in Tapa under Hamren Police Station jurisdiction, reportedly over paddy harvesting rights involving Khasi residents.


The situation at Baithlangsho Border has turned tense after a confrontation reportedly left one person dead and another seriously injured. According to local sources, the incident began when Karbi residents attempted to prevent paddy harvesting by Khasi individuals, resulting in an alleged direct attack. Arial Timung was fatally injured, while Stenwel Timung sustained serious injuries in the melee.


Eyewitness reports stated that sharp weapons were used during the altercation, which quickly intensified into a larger confrontation. Heightened unrest in the border area prompted authorities to deploy additional security forces, who resorted to firing and tear gas to bring the situation under control.


Police and administration officials have confirmed the fatality and said that efforts are underway to restore peace. Authorities have imposed heightened security measures and are closely monitoring developments in the region.
