A sudden three-hour downpour on the evening of August 27 paralysed life in Assam’s capital, inundating major roads and residential areas and causing severe traffic snarls across the city.
Floodwaters were reported across key areas, including Zoo Road, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar, Hatigaon, Gita Nagar, Panjabari, Jorabat, Jatia, VIP Road, Rajgarh Road, Rukmini Gaon, and Survey. Commuters returning from work were stranded, while ambulances struggled to reach patients, heightening public distress.
Some neighborhoods also faced power outages, according to city officials. Authorities have deployed emergency response teams and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further disruption.

The heavy rains have once again highlighted the city’s chronic waterlogging issues, a concern repeatedly flagged by the Gauhati High Court. In August 2023, the court had reprimanded the state government for failing to address persistent flooding and demanded a comprehensive mitigation plan. Four concerned departments had been fined Rs 1,000 each for inaction at the time.
With the monsoon still active, city residents are bracing for potential flooding in low-lying areas, prompting authorities to urge caution and preparedness.
