“We opposed it, but the majority helped pass the UCC bill in voice vote”: Wazed Ali Choudhury
Congress MLA and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Wazed Ali Choudhury on May 27 said the opposition strongly opposed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, which was passed in the Assam Assembly, and had also moved amendments during the discussion.
Choudhury said the Congress had demanded that the Bill be referred to a select committee for detailed scrutiny and wider consultation before its passage.
“We tried to oppose it. We also gave amendments, but the ruling party has a majority and the Bill was passed in voice vote,” Choudhury said.
He said opposition members raised objections to the proposed legislation and repeatedly sought a select committee review, but the ruling party’s majority ensured the Bill’s passage in the Assembly.
"Few sections in the UCC are against the Muslim law," the CLP added.
The Assam Assembly on May 27 passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill through a voice vote amid opposition protests and demands for further examination of the legislation. The government has maintained that the proposed law aims to bring uniformity in personal laws and promote gender justice.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 27 defended the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) legislation in the Assam Assembly, claiming that the Congress was the first political party to advocate for a Uniform Civil Code nearly a century ago and alleging that the opposition party has moved away from secular values.
Replying to questions during a discussion on The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, 2026 Bill, Sarma said the legislation is rooted in Article 44 of the Indian Constitution and not based on any BJP or RSS ideology, as alleged by opposition members.
