West Karbi Anglong on edge as protesters torch shops, DGP warns of strict action
The tense law and order situation in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district persisted on December 23 evening as incidents of arson were reported amid ongoing unrest.
Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, IPS, who has been camping in the violence-hit area, addressed the media and appealed to protesters to refrain from violence and cooperate with the administration.
The DGP said additional security forces have been deployed in sensitive locations to prevent further escalation and maintain public order. He added that senior police officials are engaging directly with agitating groups in an effort to defuse tensions and restore normalcy. Warning of strict action, Singh said those involved in torching shops and other acts of violence would be identified and proceeded against in accordance with the law.

Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita continue to remain in force, with a heavy security presence across Kheroni and adjoining areas. Authorities said the restrictions are necessary to prevent gatherings and further incidents of violence.
State Minister Ranoj Pegu also appealed for peace, urging all sides to maintain restraint. Officials said a tripartite dialogue involving stakeholders has been scheduled for December 26 under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address the issues underlying the unrest.
While the situation remains tense, officials maintained that it is under control and that efforts are underway through administrative and security measures to bring the situation back to normal.
