Where was he during our crisis?: Evicted families of Haseela Beel confront MP Rakibul Hussain

Tensions ran high in Goalpara’s Haseela Beel area on Sunday, June 22 as angry locals confronted Congress MP Rakibul Hussain during his visit to the ongoing eviction site.

The situation escalated when a furious mob surrounded Hussain’s convoy, pelting slippers and bottles and preventing him from reaching the eviction-affected zone. In response, the MP's team quickly retreated to their vehicle and left the area.

The hostile reaction reflected the simmering anger of the local residents who have been impacted by a series of eviction drives led by the district administration to remove alleged encroachments from government land in Haseela Beel.

Many displaced families have expressed their frustration over what they claim is political apathy and lack of timely support.

“He was missing when we were suffering. Why is he here now? Does he think we’re beggars?” shouted a visibly agitated resident during the confrontation. Another added, “We don’t need such an MP. We stood alone during our crisis.”

The incident has triggered a fresh wave of political debate in the region, with critics questioning the timing of the MP's visit and the lack of proactive support for those affected. The administration has not yet commented on the matter, but security arrangements around eviction zones have reportedly been tightened.

The eviction drive in Haseela Beel continues to stir controversy, as calls grow louder for rehabilitation, transparency, and fair treatment of those being displaced.
