Why did Assam govt stop CJP protest outside Janata Bhawan? Himanta explains
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has explained why police stopped a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) outside Janata Bhawan, saying the organisers had not sought permission to hold the demonstration at the location.
Sarma said the government had initially granted permission for the CJP to hold its protest at a designated venue in Chachal and later allowed the party to use a second venue in response to its request.
However, according to the Chief Minister, a CJP protest was subsequently organised at the residence of one Dudul Choudhury, located opposite Janata Bhawan, without permission.
“First of all, I gave permission to the government-designated place in Chachal. Then they asked for a second venue. I gave permission for the second venue as well,” Sarma said.
He said the government intervened when CJP workers gathered at Choudhury's residence opposite Janata Bhawan, as the location had not been approved for the protest.
“One person wanted to create a ruckus outside Janata Bhawan, which we stopped,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister said police arrested CJP workers after they gathered at the unauthorised location, while reiterating that permission had been granted for the venues formally sought by the party.
