Why Himanta Biswa Sarma calls elections a tool for policy, not just politics

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasised that for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), every election—be it Panchayat, Municipality, or Lok Sabha—is more than just a contest for power.

It is a vital grassroots mechanism to gather real-time public feedback, which in turn helps shape governance and policy decisions.

Speaking to reporters amid the ongoing campaign for the Panchayat elections, CM Sarma said, “From Panchayat to Lok Sabha, we take every election seriously because election campaigns are a medium through which real grassroots information is obtained, which can be effectively implemented in policies.”

“The BJP places great importance on Panchayat elections, unlike others. For us, every election matters—it allows us to connect with people directly and understand their real thoughts and concerns, which helps improve governance.”

He further explained that BJP legislators actively visit every part of their constituencies during campaigns, not only to seek votes but also to listen to the people. “When we identify gaps or challenges, we see them as opportunities to improve—and we act to resolve them,” he said.

Highlighting his action-driven leadership approach, CM Sarma revealed that following the Panchayat elections, he will personally chair at least seven follow-up meetings to track the issues raised and monitor progress. “This ongoing process ensures that in the coming year, we move forward with tangible progress. This approach not only drives development but also strengthens our ability to serve the people better,” he said.

Drawing parallels with his campaign intensity during Assembly elections, Sarma said, “Just as I hold 4-5 meetings daily during Assembly polls, I am continuing the same intensity even today, with four meetings scheduled.”

Reiterating the BJP’s grassroots-oriented political strategy, the Chief Minister concluded, “Whether it's Panchayat or Municipality... for us, every election is a priority.”

The second phase of Assam’s Panchayat elections is scheduled for May 7, and BJP is looking to consolidate its rural stronghold, guided by a campaign narrative focused on development, delivery, and deep engagement with the people.
