‘Why loudspeakers for Azaan?’ Assam BJP MLA Diganta Kalita seeks legal review
BJP MLA Diganta Kalita has raised concerns over the use of loudspeakers for Azaan in the vicinity of the Assam Legislative Assembly, saying he has no objection to the religious practice itself but questioned the necessity of using amplifiers.
Speaking to reporters, Kalita said he has been residing near the Assembly premises for the past five years and hears the Azaan being recited five times daily.
“I have no objection to the Azaan itself. Muslims are free to perform the Azaan five times a day, just as Hindus also follow their own religious practices. But why must it be done through loudspeakers? Where is it written that the Azaan has to be recited using loudspeakers?” he said.
The BJP legislator added that he is examining the issue from a legal perspective and plans to consult legal experts to understand whether there are any specific court rulings related to the use of loudspeakers for religious purposes.
Kalita’s remarks are likely to trigger political debate in the state, where issues concerning religious practices and noise regulations have periodically sparked public and political discussions.
