A wild elephant was found dead on Sunday at the residence of Amulya Chutia in Katha-Kahoroni village under Jagun Range Office of the Digboi Forest Division in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
According to forest officials, the elephant had reportedly strayed from the nearby reserved forest area before dying in the village. No visible external injuries were found on its body, and the exact cause of death remains unknown pending further investigation.
This incident marks the second elephant death within a week in areas under the Digboi Forest Division. The earlier death has also raised concerns among wildlife authorities and conservationists about the safety and habitat conditions of elephants in the region.
Forest department personnel have launched an inquiry and will conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Officials urged local residents to report sightings of elephants to help prevent human–wildlife conflict and avoid further casualties.
