‘Will bring strong law against hate speech; Even Himanta Biswa Sarma may face 5 years’ jail’: Gaurav Gogoi

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on March 26 said that if a Congress government comes to power in Assam, it would introduce a stringent law against hate speech, warning that anyone spreading hatred against any religion would face strict punishment.

“We will bring in a strong law against hate speech. Anyone, including Himanta Biswa Sarma, who spreads hatred against any religion will face strict action, including up to five years in jail,” Gogoi said while addressing a rally.

He said the law would apply across all communities, including Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Sikhism, and would ensure accountability for those inciting communal divisions.

Gogoi added that the move reflects the Congress party’s commitment to maintaining communal harmony and upholding the rule of law in the State.

The remarks come amid ongoing political campaigning in Assam ahead of the elections.
