Woman dies after alleged bite by husband following domestic dispute in Assam's Sivasagar
A woman died after her health deteriorated days following an alleged assault by her husband during a domestic dispute in Assam's Sivasagar district, with the husband admitting that he bit her during the altercation.
The incident took place in the Babupatty area of Sivasagar town, where Yusuf Ali, a native of Morigaon district, was living with his wife, Safia Khatun, in a rented house owned by Anjuma Hazarika.
According to local residents, an argument broke out between the couple on July 13 over an undisclosed issue. During the altercation, both allegedly bit each other, leaving Safia Khatun with injuries while Yusuf Ali sustained minor wounds.
Speaking on camera, Yusuf Ali admitted that he had bitten his wife during the fight. He also acknowledged that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
On Thursday, July 16, after Safia Khatun's condition worsened, the landlord arranged for an ambulance and shifted her to Sivasagar Civil Hospital. She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she died later in the day.
Sources said Safia Khatun was Yusuf Ali's second wife, while his first wife resides in Morigaon district.
Doctors have not yet officially confirmed the exact cause of Safia Khatun's death or whether it was directly linked to the injuries sustained during the altercation. A post-mortem examination is expected to determine the cause of death.
Police said no formal complaint had been lodged by either side at the time of filing this report. However, the unusual incident has sparked widespread attention in the district.
