Women gathered for Assam government's programme rush to meet Rahul Gandhi, claims Jairam Ramesh

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh who is part of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra claimed that women who had assembled in the state's Mariani to collect forms for welfare schemes initiated by the BJP government in Assam rushed to meet Rahul Gandhi. 

Taking to his X handle, Jairam Ramesh wrote, "Women assembled for a function organised by the Assam CM in Mariani spontaneously and enthusiastically met @RahulGandhi on Day 5 of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra."

As per sources, Rahul Gandhi's bus halted at a school in Mariani, where women had assembled to collect forms for welfare schemes initiated by the BJP government in Assam.

These women, who had assembled spontaneously and with great enthusiasm for the function, had the opportunity to meet Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is on his Assam leg of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. 

As per reports, the Assam government has organised an event to distribute forms for the ambitious "Lakhpati Baideo" scheme to empower 40 lakh self-help group (SHG) workers to help them become rural micro-entrepreneurs.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the ambitious scheme, which will offer Rs 35,000 financial assistance to 40 lakh women, aims to empower women workers to achieve an annual income of Rs 1 lakh.

"The scheme will fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of building two crore 'Lakhpati didis' and we proudly unveil the new programme which will help 40 lakh women," he said in a tweet on X, formerly Twitter.

It is to be mentioned here that the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, initiated in Manipur on January 14, set off today from the vicinity of the Tuli post office in Nagaland at 8 am. The journey covered approximately 1.5 kilometres within Nagaland, reaching the Assam border at 9.30 am, marked by a formal 'flag handover' at the interstate border.

The day's comprehensive schedule included a morning break at Puthinadi, Jorhat, followed by a media interaction with Jairam Ramesh.

The Yatra resumed from Nakachari Debarapara, Jorhat, and started from Lahoty Petrol Pump in Jorhat Town to Nehru Park Cheriyali Jorhat, followed by a public address. The night halt was at Kumar Gaon, Nimati Road Jorhat. Gandhi is expected to travel 833 km in Assam, with the Yatra concluding in the state on January 25, 2024.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership has been marked by efforts to reform the state government over the past decade, focusing on financial and administrative improvements. 

The chance meeting between the women at the CM's event and Rahul Gandhi underscores the dynamic political landscape in Assam, where discussions on women's empowerment, social justice, and political representation continue to be at the forefront of public discourse.
