"Won’t work if not voted": Congress slams BJP candidate for 'undemocratic' statement, sparks debate
Campaigning has intensified in Assam’s Boko-Chaygaon Assembly constituency ahead of the upcoming elections, with political parties stepping up outreach efforts and sharpening their attacks against rivals.
The constituency has recently witnessed controversy following remarks made by BJP candidate Raju Mech during a campaign event. Mech stated that if voters do not support the BJP, he would not undertake development work in those areas. The comment, made in the run-up to polling, has drawn reactions from both political opponents and sections of the electorate.
Congress candidate Ramen Singh Rabha criticised the statement, calling it undemocratic. Rabha, a former president of the All Rabha Students’ Union, alleged that such remarks reflect an authoritarian approach to governance. He further said that elected representatives are expected to serve all constituents irrespective of electoral outcomes.
The Boko-Chaygaon constituency, which has more than 1.8 lakh registered voters, has historically seen closely contested elections among the BJP, Congress and the National People’s Party (NPP). Political observers consider the seat significant in determining electoral trends in Kamrup district.
Key issues in the constituency include rural infrastructure, employment generation and representation of indigenous communities. Candidates across parties have been focusing on these concerns while engaging with voters through rallies, door-to-door campaigns and digital outreach.
With polling day approaching, the political contest in Boko-Chaygaon is expected to remain closely watched as parties seek to consolidate support among diverse voter groups in Lower Assam.
