Writer and filmmaker Nimananda Das dies in road accident in Assam's Majuli

Noted Assamese writer, critic, screenwriter and filmmaker Nimananda Das died in a road accident in Majuli, leaving his family and the literary and cultural community in mourning.

A pall of gloom descended on his residence in Batguri-Buddhabasi in the Srijangram area of Bongaigaon district following news of his death.

Das was a regular contributor to several newspapers and magazines. He was also associated with the film industry and had worked as an assistant director on films such as Ase Ne Kono Ba Hiyat and Soru Bowari, directed by Baharul Islam.

He had also written screenplays for and directed several television serials.

Das had recently travelled to Majuli for the shooting of Rumayung, a film based on the life of forest conservationist and Padma Shri awardee Jadav Payeng. The film is being directed by Das and stars Pabitra Rabha and Rajib Kr. in prominent roles.

His mortal remains are expected to be brought back on Monday, August 31.

Das is survived by his mother, wife, son and daughter.
