Youth brutally assaulted on suspicion of being Bangladeshi infiltrator in Assam's Cachar; tension grips border area

Tension has gripped the Swadir Khal area along the India-Bangladesh border in Assam's Cachar district after a youth was allegedly assaulted by a group of miscreants who suspected him of being a Bangladeshi infiltrator.

According to local sources, the incident occurred late on Sunday night near a bridge in the Swadir Khal area under Katigorah. The victim, identified as Hussain Ahmed, was reportedly travelling from Saidpur to Gumra when he was intercepted by a group of individuals.

The attackers allegedly mistook Ahmed for a Bangladeshi national and subjected him to a severe assault. He was reportedly beaten for an extended period before being left unconscious by the roadside.

Local residents later rescued the injured youth and rushed him to Kalain Hospital for treatment. However, due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Hospital sources said the victim remains in critical condition and is battling for his life at the medical college.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those involved in the assault.

The attack has sparked concern among residents and led to heightened tension in the border area, with locals demanding strict action against those responsible for the assault. Police have appealed for calm while the investigation is underway.
