Zubeen Garg’s family announces plans to establish trust in the artist’s name

Family members of Zubeen Garg on January 2 announced plans to institutionalise the celebrated artist’s legacy through the formation of a dedicated trust aimed at carrying forward his cultural, social and environmental work. The announcement was made by Palmee Borthakur and Garima Garg while outlining a long-term roadmap to preserve Garg’s ideals, creativity and public life beyond his music.

“Zubeen Garg is, and will always remain, an integral and eternal part of Assam and its people,” they said, highlighting the need to safeguard his dreams, work, dedication, creativity, ideals, and beliefs for posterity.

The proposed trust, named the Kalaguru Artist Foundation, will work in accordance with Zubeen Garg’s vision, promoting the welfare of society, culture, nature, and the youth. As the first step, the family plans to dedicate their property in Kharghuli to the trust.

In addition, initiatives under the trust will include supporting the Abhinaya: Jongki Barthakur Environment Art Centre, established by Garg in honour of his sister, and the formation of a dedicated research wing to study and document his life, works, and socio-cultural impact.

The initiative will involve collaboration with Garg’s friends, seniors, juniors, and supporters from Assam’s social, cultural, administrative, and media circles. The Zubeen Fan Club, described by the artist as his “army,” will also participate.

The organisers sought the blessings and support of the people of Assam in this effort to continue the artist’s legacy through structured cultural, social, and intellectual initiatives.
