Gangtok, September 25, 2019:

Sikkim Chief Minister PS Golay, during the 15th Finance Commission, stressed on core government policies to boost the overall economic development in the state.

Golay, while addressing the Commission, said that the core of all the state government policies is protection of national security, sustainability, preservation of the state’s rich culture, heritage and the state’s natural wealth and resources and Sikkim will focus on strengthening these areas to accelerate state economy.

The CM also briefed on the legacy debt that has been inherited by the present government and requested the Commission to consider the visions as well as the hindrances of the state while submitting their recommendations.

Golay sought the Commission’s recommendations to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system in Sikkim as it has turned out be a successful one.

He further spoke on the need to create and strengthen institutes in the state in order to carry out research work on climate change, sustainability, water management amongst others.

Golay also stressed on the state government’s commitment towards making the youth of Sikkim self-reliant through skill development and entrepreneurship activities.

The 15th Finance Commission was attended by leaders of Sikkim. Cabinet Ministers, Chief Secretary and Senior Officers also attended the meeting held with a focus to boost the economy.

The CM informed that a high-level task force was deployed in order to monitor the overall development in the state, adding that, Sikkim was fully committed to contribute in PM Modi’s vision of making India a $ 5 trillion economy.

The 15th Commission’s Chairman assured that it would consider the visions and challenges presented by the state government while submitting their recommendations to the President of India. He also acknowledged the obstacles that the state faces in terms of connectivity.

A meeting with the State trade and Industry bodies was also held to discuss GST, employment, entrepreneurship, and issues and challenges faced by private companies.
