First Meghalaya CM Captain Williamson Sangma remembered on his 31st death anniversary

SHILLONG: The first Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Late Captain Williamnson A Sangma, was fondly remembered on his 31st death anniversary today.

The state honoured his indelible contributions to the state and its people.

Taking to Twitter Present Chief Minister of the state Conrad K Sangma wrote, "Today marks the 31st death anniversary of Captain Williamson A Sangma, Meghalaya’s founder Chief Minister and the pioneer who fronted the Hill State Movement. We honour his indelible contributions to our State & its people."

Williamson the founder of Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the twenty-first state of India on 21 January 1972 was born on 18 October 1919 in Baghmara, South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.

He was also the first-ever Governor of Mizoram among the Garos in 1989.

Captain Williamson A. Sangma was a statesman, tribal leader, and a pioneer in the campaign for the creation of the state of Meghalaya, which is home to three ancient hill communities: the Garos, Jaintias, and Khasis.

Even after uniting his political group with the Congress(I) party, he continued to represent Baghmara assembly constituency.

He entered into politics in 1952 after serving in the military and was later elected as the Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).

He died on 25 October 1990.
