GANGTOK: In a tragic incident, a 6-day-old baby girl succumbed to a coronavirus infection while undergoing treatment at the Central Referral Hospital at Tadong in Sikkim.

A 6-day-old baby, who had tested COVID-19 while her mother has tested negative, finally breathed her yesterday, becoming one of the youngest casualties of the viral disease in the country.

The infant, a was born in Namchi district hospital, and she was referred to the CRH Tadong 6 days ago after birth and was kept in SICU while her mother had tested COVID negative, a statement issued by CRH Hospital said.

While the child's mother had tested negative and was kept outside SICU in the hospital, the newborn was undergoing treatment, CRH officials said in a statement.

Sikkim reported 828 fresh cases of COVID-19 in a span of 48 hours on Thursday, taking the state’s total cumulative COVID count to 14634.

Currently, the Himalayan state stands at 3794 cases of COVID-19.

A total of 227 COVID-19 patients recovered within the last 24 hours taking the state’s cumulative recovered cases to 10385.

The state’s death tally has reached 243 with 3 more deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.

The East District recorded 235 new cases while the west district recorded 47. The south and the north districts reported 136 and 02 new cases of COVID-19 respectively.

A total of 1422 samples were tested in the past 24 hours, out of which 429 samples were tested through Rapid Antigen Test.
