The aim of the protest was to convey the message to the government of India as well as the government of Assam that they should rethink the Bill, which poses a grave threat to the people of the state. The students also said that Assam is not a "dumping ground for foreigners", and demanded the Government to withdraw the Bill.
The students also called on Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal to oppose the Bill. One of the agitating students said: "Sarbananda Sonowal, who has been hailed as a jatiya nayak, must come out to oppose the Bill and safeguard the culture, language, and identity of the Assamese people. The people have voted you into power, and they can remove you if you disappoint them.."
