NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said that the 14th of August will be observed as ‘Partition Horror Remembrance Day’ in order to remember those who have lost their lives during the partition of India in 1947.
India ruled by the British in 1947 was divided into two countries- India and Pakistan. As a result of THIS, many people were forced to leave their homes and separate their ways.
It is estimated that around 1 million to 2 million people lost their lives in the partition. Things became more miserable when communal outbursts took place including the abduction of women and sexual assaults.
Punjab was the place where most of the clashes took place, with the expelling of the Muslim population from east Punjab. Around 10 million to 20 million people were displaced along religious lines. At the time of the partition, an estimated 15 million people crossed the newly formed borders. Passengers traveling by trains in both directions were killed. The term ‘ghost trains’ came into use when these trains started to arrive carrying corpses.

PM Modi tweeted,” The pain of the partition can never be forgotten. Because of hatred and violence, lakhs of our sisters and brothers were displaced and even lost their lives. In the memory of the struggle and sacrifice of those people, it has been decided to celebrate 14th August as ‘Vibhishika Memorial Day’.
He also added, "This day will not only inspire us to eliminate the poison of discrimination, animosity, and ill-will, but it will also strengthen unity, social harmony and human sensibilities."
PM Modi further said by remembering the partition of two countries India and Pakistan, Indians would remember the need to ‘remove the poison of social divisions.’
As soon as the announcement was declared on the eve of 75th Independence Day, the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “I welcome Adarniya PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s historic decision to observe August 14 as #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay. Even as we celebrate our freedom, let’s not forget the victims of Partition. Henceforth, we shall dedicate this day to their memory.’
Similarly, many other top BJP leaders have expressed their happiness at the inception of the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.
