NEW DELHI: Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), or Cost and Works Accountant (ICWA) qualification will be treated equivalent to postgraduate degree holders, said the University Grants Commission yesterday.
According to the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) holders of a company, secretary degrees will now be able to obtain a Ph.D. in commerce or related disciplines.
The course content has been developed to keep pace with the dynamic nature of the global governance system.

“The University Grants Commission @ugc_india has resolved that CA Qualification will be treated equivalent to PG Degree based on requests submitted from @theicai. This will not only help CA’s for pursuing higher studies but will also facilitate the mobility of Indian CAs globally,” the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India tweeted.
The institute also has a full-fledged academic and research arm that develops members' and students' knowledge and skills and encourages them to conduct research in crucial areas such as corporate governance, CSR, securities laws, tax laws stock market, company law, finance, accounting, economic and other commercial laws, and so on, said ICSI.
This recognition would open up a whole new world of opportunities for company secretaries, said Nagendra D Rao, president of the ICSI.
Such acknowledgments reaffirm that, as the emphasis on good governance grows, the demand for Company Secretaries as skilled professionals is both pervasive and unavoidable.
