KHARKUTTA (NORTH GARO HILLS): Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma today laid the foundation for the upgrade of the United Kharkutta Higher Secondary School in North Garo Hills district in presence of Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin.

The upgrade project is an estimate worth Rs 4 crore.

Speaking at the event, Sangma urged the school authorities to ensure completion of the upgradation project by December 2022.

The school, established in 1953 by members of around 6 villages in the area namely, Kharkutta, Melopara, Tengabari, Salpara, Kholaipara and Kamagandim, was brought under deficit system in 1959 which provincialised in the year 1981.

The school was upgraded to higher secondary level in the year 2002.

Currently, the school is in a state of despair with inadequate infrastructure to meet the needs of the students of the area.
