DIMAPUR: Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Rajesh Soundararanjan has banned extraction of sand gravels and boulders in rivers and streams of Dimapur district with special focus on 200 metres upstream and downstream from the existing bridges and culverts.
In a notification on Tuesday, Soundararanjan said the order was issued to preserve the rivers and its resources and to address the issue of inundation of floodwater in the surrounding villages and colonies along the river bank and avoid damage to public assets like bridges.
He noted that destruction of ecology and river bed is taking place due to rampant extraction of boulders and sand gravels in the streams of the district.
Failure to adhere to the order will result in prosecution, including seizure and confiscation of machinery and equipment, the notification said.
