Delhi Violence Condemned by People of All Faiths in Shillong

Shillong, February 29, 2020:

Shillong residents belonging to all the faiths came together to condemn the communal protests that claimed more than 40 lives in Northeast part of Delhi.

At a time when the national capital is burning with violent protests between Hindus and Muslims, people of all faiths in Shillong stood together and sent out the message to stay united.

Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR), a progressive people’s group in Meghalaya on Friday organised an all-faith solidarity vigil at Don Bosco's mini stadium in Shillong and huge participation was witnessed at the event.

TUR leader Angela Rangad, while addressing the gathering at the event, said, "The coming together of members of Hindu, Sikh, Christian and Muslim communities, among others, is not just a victory in itself but also a beginning."

One of the attendees of the all-faith event said, “Loss of life is a loss of humanity,” and added that violence of any form should be condemned.

It needs mention here that the Delhi violence had occurred on February 23rd, when nearly 500 people, mainly women and children, voiced out against the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA. Jaffrabad, Chandbag and the nearby areas were blocked. The metro line along the route was also suspended during the protest initially.

Clashes took place later between Anti-CAA and pro-CAA protesters with stone pelting at each other. Shops and private property have been vandalized since then. The death toll has also increased to 42 on Saturday.

Senior IPS officer S.N. Shrivastava has been given additional charge of Commissioner of Police, Delhi from March 1 until “further orders,” an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said.
