Gangtok, June 2, 2019:

India’s longest serving chief minister Pawan Chamling who was dethroned in the recently concluded Assembly polls in Sikkim vowed to do politics till his last breath.

Speculations were rife in Sikkim that the former CM Pawan Chamling may quit politics after his party’s ouster from the helm of power. However, Chamling rubbished the speculations saying “I will do politics till my last breath.”

After being ousted from power, Chamling said his party would go for introspection to find out the reasons for the debacle in the recent polls.

“SKM came to power because of anti-incumbency factor, not because of their popularity. Now, we will look after what went wrong from our side and we will try to sort it out,” Chamling said.

He also termed the 25 years rule of the Sikkim Democratic Front as the ‘Golden era of Sikkim.”

Five-time Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling's tenure ended in Sikkim after over 24 years in power as his party, the Sikkim Democratic Front or SDF lost the state elections to a resurgent Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).

While the SDF got 15 seats in the hill state, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, which was formed in 2013, bagged 17 seats, one more than required for a majority in the 32-member Assembly.

Mr Chamling, however, was elected from two assembly constituencies in the state assembly elections, Election Commission officials said.

He had contested the elections from Namchi Singhithang and Poklok Kamrang assembly constituencies, they said.

SKM leader, PS Golay, meanwhile, has been instated as the new Chief Minister of the State on May 27.

Sikkim Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oath of office to Mr. Golay at a grand ceremony at the Palzor Stadium in Gangtok.
