NEW DELHI: A powerful earthquake of the magnitude 7.0 on the Richter Scale rocked Fukushima Prefecture in Japan.

The earthquake struck at the depth of 54 km at 7:37 pm, the United States Geological Survey reported on Saturday. The epicentre of the quake was located 90 km east northeast (ENE) of Namie town of Japan.

No casualty has been reported so far. No major damage has also been reported.

More than 8 lakh households were hit by blackouts, Tokyo Electric Power Co said.

The US Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no report that a tsunami was imminent.

Japan is an earthquake-prone country as it is located within the Ring of Fire -- a notorious area in the Pacific Ocean with extremely high seismic activity.
