Endangered Hawk Species Rescued In Manipur

An endangered hawk species rescued by youth at Sugnu Siphai village in the southern part of Manipur was later handed it over to the state forest officials in the morning on Thursday.

The red-tailed hawk, locally known as Kharang Meingangbi (Scientific named Buteo jamaicensis) was later released in wild in the Keibul Lamjao National Park, a part of Loktak, the largest freshwater Lake in northeastern India on Thursday at around 11.30 am, an officer of the state forest department said.

L Babuyai, RO of the Moirang Forest Area, Manipur’s Bishnupur district, said that youth of Sugnu Sophia village, namely Oinam Dhaneshore (35) has handed over the rare bird of prey species to the officials of the forest department.

It was later released at the National park after giving vaccinations at state veterinary office, Moirang division. The bird was in good health, the regional officer said. Oinam Dhaneshore said that the hawk was rescued after it incidentally took shelters at his dwelling house on Wednesday night.
