GUWAHATI: Forest personnel on Friday shot dead a wild buffalo that went berserk and killed one person in Biswanath district of Assam.
Forest officials said the department’s personnel tried to chase the buffalo back into the Sixth Addition of Kaziranga National Park. However, they had to resort to firing at the animal when it attacked them back.

The buffalo had on Thursday attacked one person at Muttack Gaon, identified as Jayanta Das, who succumbed to his injuries on his way to hospital.
The incident led to a mob violence in which the irate people torched a forest range office as well as a departmental vehicle. The office is adjacent to the Kaziranga National Park’s Sixth Addition. They alleged forest department’s inaction led to the death of the villager.
Forest officials said the buffalo had apparently swum across the river and reached Biswanath Ghat. It started charging people feeling threatened.
