Gangtok, September 22, 2019:

Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling, India's longest serving Chief Minister, celebrates his 69th birthday today.

In May 2014, Pawan Chamling was sworn in as the Sikkim Chief Minister for a record 5th consecutive time.

In December 1994, Chamling led his party, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) to a historic election win by dethroning his former mentor, Nar Bahadur Bhandari.

On April 29, 2018, Chamling created history by becoming the longest-serving Chief Minister in the country when he bettered the record set by late Jyoti Basu, who was at the forefront of the Left Front government in Bengal for an uninterrupted 23 years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to wish Chamling on his birthday. He said, "Birthday greetings to Sikkim CM Shri Pawan Chamling Ji. For over two decades he’s been tirelessly working for Sikkim’s growth. I pray for his long and healthy life."
