LUCKNOW: Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party and the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has tested positive for COVID-19.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus and have isolated myself," the SP chief confirmed on Twitter.

Many who have come into touch with the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister have also been urged to get themselves tested.

"I kindly ask anyone who has had contact with me in the last few days to get checked for COVID-19. I also ask that all of these people be isolated for a few days "Akhilesh Yadav tweeted in Hindi.

Yadav recently met Mahant Narendra Giri, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, who recently tested positive for COVID-19. Giri was transferred from a private nursing home in Haridwar to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

At the same time, Akhilesh met with several state government officials.

Yadav recently stated that members of his party will be vaccinated only after the free anti-coronavirus vaccine is provided to the needy, implying that the vaccinations are ineffective.

In January, he referred to anti-coronavirus vaccines as "BJP vaccines" and said he would refuse to take them, prompting a stinging rebuke from the ruling party, which accused him of "insulting" doctors and scientists.

Yadav later clarified that he never insulted the scientists who produced the vaccines.
