Guwahati, August 25, 2019:

A Gorkha jawan, Lance Naik, was martyred while fighting Pakistani armed forced in Jammu & Kashmir. This incident has stirred up the community, and many have come forward to express their grief at the untimely demise of the jawan. One unidentified Gorkha youth from Kalchini chose to go on a rant in a video, which has gone viral.

In a video that is being widely circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, the youth, while holding the tricolor flag close to his heart, can be heard saying, "Some people and organizations call us foreigners, call us Nepalis. We have been born in India, we have performed our deeds in India. Our martyr has shown a great example by laying down his life. Are we foreigners? We have done our studies in Hindi, but we are treated as adopted children."

The unrecognized youth also laments the neglect that the Gorkhas face from the media. "None of the national media have come here, only a local news channel is here.."

Breaking down into tears, the youth further says, "I have been overcome by grief after coming to know that my neighbor was martyred. How will his family continue without him? But I am proud at the same time, we are Gorkhas!"

Holding his traditional Gorkha dagger close, he says, "If the Government allows us, we will enter Pakistan and kill our enemies with our daggers, but we are treated with suspicion when we carry our daggers.. Why are we treated like adopted children?"

He further continues, "We are often referred to as Nepalis. Are we Nepalis?"

This sensational video has created quite the stir on social media platforms and has given people food for thought regarding the alleged discrimination against the Gorkha community. In Assam, too, Gorkhas are up-in-arms, and many have alleged that they are being excluded from the Assam NRC, due for an August 31 publication.
