GANGTOK: The Assam Government has announced a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh to Assamese pugilist Lovlina Borgohain’s coach Sandhya Gurung from Sikkim as a show of gratitude.
“I am obliged with the Assam Government. I am to continue my responsibilities as a coach to train budding pugilists of not only Sikkim but Northeastern states as well,” said Sandhya Gurung.
Gurung added, “Lovlina’s success has cast me more responsibilities on my shoulder to produce the best pugilists for the nation.”

To summarise the relationship, Sandhya apart from being a coach to world-class boxer Lovlina shares a bond no less than a “mother and daughter” off the ring.
Citing the importance of a coach in a sportsperson’s life, the Assam Government decided to felicitate Sandhya and three other coaches - Prashanta Das, Padum Barua and Rafael Gamavaska - who were a part of Lovlina's boxing journey as a token of gratitude from the people of Assam.
Sandhya Gurung also credited her husband, who is also a national boxing coach, for this achievement and support in technical expects.
