DHAKA: Indian President Ram Nath Kovind arrived in Bangladesh as the guest of honour for their 50th Victory Day celebrations on Wednesday (December 15).
Bangladesh is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of its independence from Pakistan this year. Bangladesh or East Pakistan as it was known after independence from the British, and its guerrilla resistance movement, 'Mukti Bahini', won the 1971 war with the help of Indian military forces and separated itself from West Pakistan on December 16.
President Kovind is on a three-day visit to Bangladesh, during which he will attend a series of events including the Victory Day celebrations.
Kovind also met Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister, Abdul Momen in Dhaka on Wednesday. He was accorded a red carpet welcome and a guard of honour.
It needs mention here that India's decisive military victory over Pakistan in the third war between the neighbours, which led to the creation of Bangladesh as a separate nation is considered one of the country`s greatest military victories.
