MUMBAI: India's first alleged Omicron death has been reported from Maharashtra amid a sharp uptick of COVID-19 cases in the state.
Reports say that a 52-year-old man with a travel history to Nigeria had died of a heart attack on December 28 at Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's Yashwantrao Chavan Hospital. He had been a diabetes patient for 13 years.
The Maharashtra government says that the death of the patient was due to non-Covid reasons. "Coincidently, his samples that were sent to the National Institute of Virology revealed that he was infected with the Omicron variant," the public health department said in a statement.
